Bridges are the means by which dentists replace missing teeth. They take many forms but essentially there are two types:
Fixed bridges
Crowns placed on teeth or implants in front of and behind the empty space are connected with replacement teeth we call "pontics". We make fixed bridges exactly the way we make crowns and, like crowns, they are permanently cemented to the teeth. In the case of implants, the bridges may be attached by screws instead of cement.
Removable bridges
Also called partial dentures. These appliances are used to replace teeth when, for one reason or another, fixed bridges are impossible to make. They are fabricated of metal and/or plastic, are held in place with clasps or precision attachments placed within crowns, and are designed for easy removal and cleaning.
While millions of people function well with removable bridges, in our practice fixed bridges are much preferred.
